GETTING USED TO DENTAL CROWNS — WHAT IS NORMAL AND WHAT IS NOT
Prosthetics · 23 July 2025
Getting used to dental crowns usually takes from a few days to two weeks. During this period it is normal to feel mild sensitivity, pressure when biting and an unusual sensation in your mouth. If discomfort lasts longer than two weeks or worsens — contact your dentist.
What are dental crowns?
A dental crown — or tooth cap — is a prosthetic cover placed over a damaged tooth. It restores its shape, size, strength and appearance. It is cemented onto the tooth and covers the visible part above the gum line.
Reasons for placing a crown can vary: protecting a damaged tooth, covering an implant, restoring a broken tooth, or cosmetic correction of shape and colour.
What types of crowns are there?
Metal-free (zirconia) crown
Made entirely from zirconia ceramic — no metal. The most natural appearance, translucency similar to a real tooth. We recommend it for front teeth and all cases where aesthetics come first. Price at BeoSmile: €250.
Ceramic (metal-ceramic) crown
Titanium base covered with ceramic. Extremely strong and reliable — most often used for back teeth and implant restorations. Price at BeoSmile: €150.
What does the adjustment period look like?
The first few days
Mild sensitivity to hot and cold is normal — the tooth was prepared and needs time to settle down. A feeling that something is not quite right when biting is also common. The crown is new and your brain needs a few days to adjust.
The first two weeks
Sensitivity should gradually decrease. The bite settles. If you feel the crown is too high — that you cannot bite properly — contact your dentist. This is simple and quickly resolved.
When to contact your dentist?
Contact your dentist if:
Sensitivity is getting worse rather than better
You notice bite pain that does not subside
The crown feels loose or has moved
Pain appears that was not present immediately after placement
How long do crowns last?
A metal-free zirconia crown lasts 15 to 20 years with proper care. A ceramic crown similarly. The key is regular oral hygiene and check-up appointments.
