DENTAL CROWNS — EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW

Prosthetics · BeoSmile

Dental crowns are caps placed over damaged teeth. They restore the tooth's shape, size, strength and natural appearance. At BeoSmile, a metal-free zirconia crown costs €250 and a ceramic crown €150 — up to 5 times cheaper than in Western Europe.

What are dental crowns?

A dental crown is a tooth-shaped cap placed over a damaged tooth and cemented in place. It covers the visible part of the tooth above the gum line and protects it from further damage.

Unlike fillings that only fill a damage, a crown covers the entire tooth — making it as strong and functional as before the damage.

When are dental crowns used?

  • The tooth is too damaged for a filling — decay has destroyed most of the tooth
  • The tooth is cracked or chipped and is at risk of breaking
  • The tooth has been weakened after root canal treatment
  • The tooth has been broken in an accident or by impact
  • The tooth is aesthetically unacceptable — changed colour, shape or size
  • The tooth supports a bridge — crowns at the ends carry the middle pontic
  • The tooth is on an implant — the crown is cemented onto the titanium post

Types of dental crowns

Metal-free zirconia crown

Made from zirconium oxide — a material that combines the strength of metal with the aesthetics of ceramic. Looks identical to a natural tooth. We recommend this for all visible teeth. Price: €250.

Metal-ceramic crown

Metal base covered with a ceramic layer. Durable and reliable. A thin metal line may be visible at the gingival margin. Price: €150.

Temporary acrylic crown

Used exclusively during the period between preparation and fitting the permanent crown — 3 to 5 days. Not a permanent option.

At BeoSmile we use exclusively Neodent by Straumann premium materials, 100% made in the EU.

How is the tooth prepared for a crown?

First visit

The tooth is gently prepared to create space for the crown. Performed under local anaesthesia. A precise impression is taken and sent to the laboratory. A temporary crown is placed to protect the tooth.

Laboratory (3–5 days)

A technician fabricates the final crown according to the impression and agreed colour and shape specifications.

Second visit

The temporary crown is removed. The final crown is tried in and adjusted as needed, then permanently cemented.

Problems that can occur

Crowns are reliable, but as with any dental work — problems can occur. The most common:

  • Sensitivity to heat and cold in the first days — resolves on its own
  • Discomfort when biting — the crown is too high, corrected quickly
  • Cement loosening — the crown can be re-cemented
  • Ceramic layer chipping — less common, possible with a strong bite

Care and lifespan

Crowns require no special care — you maintain them like natural teeth. Regular brushing, flossing and check-ups every 6 to 12 months.

With proper care, a metal-free zirconia crown lasts 15 to 20 years. Metal-ceramic 10 to 15 years.

Avoid biting nails, hard objects and ice — this can damage both natural and artificial teeth.
